This 64,000 square foot project is constructed over two floors and is a LEED Gold project. The school board, Conseil scolaire de district du Centre-Sud-Ouest, is committed to the principles of green building, as evidenced by the start of construction on the Board’s third LEED project school, École Secondaire de Windsor. As a LEED Gold project, the school has several notable features such as reduced heat island effect, specific lighting design to reduce light pollution, rainwater harvesting and reuse for toilets and urinals, to name a few. The facility is designed to save over 2.3 million litres of potable water each year and was also designed to achieve approximately 60% in energy costs over the Model National Energy Code. Some of the new high school’s energy saving features include high performance windows, efficient lighting, occupancy sensors, ground source heat pump for heating and cooling and radiant floors for heating. A significant portion of the school is constructed from recycled and regional materials, thereby reducing the impacts resulting from extraction, processing, and transportation of raw materials. Indoor air quality is an important consideration in a school. Numerous materials were specifically selected to minimize indoor air pollutants such as low off-gassing paints, coatings, sealants, adhesives, carpeting and millwork.
