City Council recognizes excellence in long-time heritage stewardship and recent conservation work through the annual Built Heritage Awards.
The Strathcona Building recently underwent a meticulous restoration of the historic structure. Originally designed by renowned architect Albert Kahn, Strathcona was built for the Walkerville Land & Building Co. in 1907. Due to deterioration over the years, the two-story brick and timber-framed building had to be completely restored. All of the existing brick masonry on the interior and exterior was ice blasted to return the masonry to its original splendor. All the mortar joints throughout were fully repointed. The limestone architectural details were brought back to their original state. The oriel windows, the structure surrounding them and the original moldings were completely removed and recreated, while existing storefronts were restored with more modernized systems.
